Small Group Training vs. a Personal Trainer in Nassau County: Which Is Right for You?
·Adult Training

You've decided it's time. You want to get strong again, and you know you need help this time, not another gym membership you stop using by March.
So which is it: a personal trainer, or small group training? If you're an adult over 40 looking at small group training in Nassau County, here's an honest look at both, and how to tell which one fits your life.
What a personal trainer gives you
One-on-one training is exactly what it sounds like: one coach, one client, one hour.
Where it shines:
- Every minute of the coach's attention is on you.
- The schedule is built around you.
- It can make sense for very specific needs, like a sport-specific goal or working closely around a medical issue with your doctor's guidance.
Where it can fall short:
- It's just you and the trainer, so there's no group expecting you to show up.
- Some people find the one-on-one spotlight more intimidating, not less.
What small group training gives you
Small group training puts a handful of people with similar goals in the room with a coach. Done right, it's not a big class with a microphone. It's coaching, shared.
Where it shines:
- You still get coached. A good small group keeps numbers low enough that the coach can watch form and adjust each exercise.
- The group keeps you consistent. People expect you. That's often what makes the habit stick.
- Less intimidating. You're training alongside adults at a similar stage of life, not performing for one person.
Where it can fall short:
- If the group gets too big, you stop being coached and start being supervised. Group size matters more than anything.
Small group training in Nassau County: what to look for
Whatever gym you choose, ask these questions before you sign up:
- How many people are in a session? Small should mean small.
- Does a coach teach and modify every exercise? You want someone scaling each movement to you, not just demonstrating once.
- Is there a plan? Each week should build on the last. Random workouts are how people stall and quit.
- Does it fit your week? If the schedule doesn't work, nothing else matters.
- Can you try it first? A good gym will let you see a session before you commit.
How RAF does small group training
At RAF Strength & Fitness in West Hempstead, our adult program is built around exactly those questions:
- Small groups, zero intimidation. Sessions are capped at 8 people, all adults like you.
- Coached and scaled to you. A coach teaches each exercise and modifies it to your current ability. Haven't trained in years? You start where you are.
- A plan that works long-term. Not random workouts. The program builds week after week.
- Only 3 hours a week. Three 1-hour sessions, with morning, midday and evening options to fit around work and family.
We also offer one-on-one personal training when a fully custom hour fits better — available, but not our main offer. For most adults over 40, small group training is what we recommend.
Members tell us the format gives them the best of both. As one Google review puts it: "The classes feel like you have a one on one personal trainer even though you are there with other people."
Another wrote: "The small group training is excellent and while we work hard, we also support each other. And laugh too!"
Results vary based on starting point, consistency, and individual effort.
So which is right for you?
Small group training is probably your fit if:
- You want real coaching but also want people around you.
- You've joined gyms before and never lasted.
- You're nervous about starting and would rather not be the only one in the spotlight.
- You can protect about 3 hours a week.
One-on-one might be the better fit if:
- You have a very specific goal or medical situation that needs a fully custom hour.
- Your schedule only works at times no group runs.
Not sure? Tell us at your first session and we'll help you figure out the best fit, with no pressure.
Always consult with a qualified healthcare provider before beginning a new fitness or nutrition program.
